I am a Blogger!
We are sneaking up on the seventh anniversary of “The Kacey Kowars Show”. On February 16, 2004 we aired our first interview on the website. Our first guest was Andre Dubus lll, the author of The House of Sand and Fog. Andre’s father, the great short story writer, has always been the prime inspiration for the show. His relentless pursuit of artistic integrity and his commitment to helping new writers find their voice (and their audience) were exemplary. We have tried to follow in his footsteps.
When I say ‘we’, I mean Chuck Adkins, the show’s editor; Marilyn Knapp Litt, the show’s webmaster; and me, Kacey Kowars, the guy who does the reading and the interviewing. We have been together for nearly seven years doing what we do. And it has all been done out of a love for reading and writing, nothing else. That approach has earned us a loyal audience and access to authors that continues to amaze me.
I stopped tracking the hits several years ago (when we went over a million). The interviews are listened to in over 125 countries. I receive emails from all over the world thanking me for the website. It is a labor of love. My interviews with Sidney Sheldon and Horton Foote are ranked #1 in Google’s relevance list (as are many others). I find this miraculous.
I have been teaching English to juniors in high school the past three years. I have integrated many of the interviews I’ve done into the classroom with exciting results. I have learned much from the authors I have interviewed these past seven years. I look forward in 2011 to bringing you the great writers of the 21st Century in depth through my new blog.
I have been reluctant to write a blog: my feeling being that there are already more than enough to go around. But I now have over 125 live archived interviews that newcomers to the website have not heard. So each week I will post a new blog discussing new interviews I’ll be doing (and new books I’m reading) as well as directing you to what I feel are the best interviews from the past. I’ll answer the question I am frequently asked, “Have you read any good books lately?” The answer is always yes. Now I’ll have a forum to tell you the ones I recommend.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the authors, editors, agents, and publicists I have had the pleasure of working with over the past seven years. They have freely given me their time, sent me their books, and helped me out by featuring our interviews on their home pages. I have become friends with Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke, Jim Harrison, Thomas H Cook, Alice McDermott, Anthony Hecht, Lee Child, Robert Crais, David Baldacci, Horton Foote, and many others. It has been an honor and a privilege.
We started out seven years ago with a simple mission- to provide readers with a forum to listen to their favorite writers discuss the craft of writing. Our mission remains the same. The publishing industry has been in turmoil the past few years. Independent bookstores are disappearing, the large chains are struggling, and e-books are now the rage. We will continue to do all that we can to help writers and their readers find each other.
